One of Johnson and Casey’s new favorite games is to lie on the floor, one on top of the other. Can you guess what this game is called? If you guessed “Hot Dog and Mustard”, you would be correct. The “hot dog” lies on the floor and the “mustard” lies on top.
I understand the mathematics of random numbers and recognize that a certain level of average rainfall can, in fact, be achieved through periods of prolonged drought followed by intense periods of torrential downpour. That being said, I respectfully submit for your consideration that a lower standard deviation of precipitation, achieved through a larger number of gentle showers with less time between, may prove to be a more effective long term management plan. Please consider this modification to your current protocol.
Tonight when it came time to select bedtime stories, Johnson brought me (in addition to his favorite book about construction machines) a book about the history of building. Katherine had checked it out from the library because she thought it might be both fun and educational, and I also thought it looked like a good book for him. Anyway, he asked me, “Is this a book about leprechauns?” Seriously. Leprechauns. I guess he learned about them at school on St. Patrick’s Day? I don’t know.
But I digress. I took a look at the book and it had a lot of words, so I told him maybe we should just read part of it and save the rest for later. After a quick examination, he agreed with me, noting that “Wow. It has a lot of pages.”
I said, “No, it doesn’t have too many pages, but look at all these words.” He took one look at the page I had opened to and his jaw literally dropped. He stood there, mouth agape and just staring at the page, for a few seconds and then said “I’ll go find a shorter book!”
We were at “Grammie’s” house today and I was getting Johnson ready to go out and play. We had the following conversation:
Johnson: I like it at this house.
Me: But you like it at our house, too, don’t you?
J: I only like the outside of our house.
We were out running some errands this morning when Casey spotted a fountain. He pointed to it and shouted “Waterfall!”, as he sometimes likes to call them. I told him it was a fountain, not a waterfall. He replied, using correct grammar and everything, “No! That’s a waterfall!”

It’s hard to believe our “little one” is already a year old! We had lots of fun today, with a picnic in the park attended by Grandma and Grandpa Brekke, “Grammie” (Grandma Meyers) and a few of our friends. Life goes by so quickly, and I am thankful to be able to spend time with friends and family on special days like today.
A few nights ago, I had the task of putting both boys to bed. Since Casey can be somewhat unpredictable, I decided to get Johnson settled first. After the normal routine, I was ready to put him in his crib and we had the following conversation:
Dad: Which animals do you want in your crib?
Johnson: I want my little monkey.
Dad: I don’t see your little monkey right now. I’ll go and look for him after I get Casey to sleep, OK?
Johnson: Yes. [slight pause] Dad, are you going to get Casey to sleep and then are you going to go out of Casey’s room and down the steps and into the kitchen and into the dining room and into the living room and are you going to look for my little monkey and then are you going to go out of the living room and into the dining room and into the kitchen and into the hallway and then are you going to get some cat food and scoop it out and feed it to Benedick because he’s a cat?
Dad: Um, sure. Night night, Johnson.
Johnson: Night night.

Sometimes it snows even here in North Carolina. On Tuesday we had about 6-8 inches of the stuff. Check out the pictures here.
